Timing
When to trim shrubs in Ohio
It depends on the plant. Shrubs that bloom in spring, such as lilac and forsythia, are best trimmed right after they flower. Summer bloomers are usually pruned in late winter or early spring. Hedges are typically trimmed after their spring growth, with light touch-ups through the summer.
Good to know
- Heavy pruning late in the fall can push out new growth that will not survive the first hard frost.
