Lawn aeration and seeding

Timing
The best time to aerate and seed in Ohio
For lawns in central Ohio, late summer to early fall is the best time, roughly late August through early October. The soil is still warm, the air is cooler, and weeds are less of a problem. Spring is the second-best window.
Good to know
- New seed needs to stay moist. Plan on light watering once or twice a day for the first two to three weeks.
- Let new grass reach about 3 inches before its first mowing.
- Core aeration leaves small plugs of soil on the lawn. They break down on their own in a week or two.
Questions
Common questions
How often should a lawn be aerated?
Most lawns do well with aeration once a year. Lawns with heavy clay soil or a lot of foot traffic benefit the most.
