Timing

Mid to late spring is the most popular time, after the soil has warmed up. Mulching in the fall also helps protect roots through the winter.

A layer 2 to 3 inches deep is enough. More than that can keep water and air from reaching the roots.
Mulch should never be piled against tree trunks or shrub stems. Keeping it pulled back a few inches lets the bark stay dry.
